What's New

It was a busy start at the new Vancouver Northeast Employment Centre. Dozens of job seekers came to the Centre to get help in finding a job. The first job seekers arrived at 8:30 am when the Centre opened. They were a couple from the Philippines.

Job seekers came to the Centre to use the computers in the Resource Centre, to get funding for training, to qualify for wage subsidies, to improve job search skills and to find out about self employment.

Centre Manager Larry Chan said orientation sessions are filling up fast and staff are excited to be offering service.

MOSAIC is operating the Vancouver Northeast Employment Centre in partnership with Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House, Kiwassa Neighbourhood House, Back in Motion, BC Centre for Ability and Vancouver Eastside Education Enrichment Society (VEEES).

The Centre is part of the Employment Program of British Columbia, funded by the BC Ministry of Social Development.

MOSAIC and its Partner Service Providers are letting job seekers know that job search services will be offered under a new program starting 2 April, 2012.

Job seekers will continue to benefit from many of the services they currently receive. There will be one-on-one support and advice from experienced employment staff; workshops on a wide variety of topics; opportunities to meet with employers; and a Resource Centre equipped with computers, where job seekers will be able to obtain information about the job market. All of these services will continue to be free.

The main difference will be that job seekers will be expected to visit the Employment Services Centre in the area of the city where they live. The City has been divided into six areas. MOSAIC and its Partner Service Providers will be operating at the Northeast Employment Centre. The main location will be 2555 Commercial Drive (Broadway and Commercial) where MOSAIC currently provides employment services . There will also be an Employment Centre for youth at 6th Avenue and Commercial.

The Partner Service Providers working with MOSAIC are: Back in Motion, BC Centre for Ability, Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House, Kiwassa Neighbourhood House and the Vancouver Eastside Educational Enrichment Society.

All the organizations are doing everything they can to make the transition to the new program as smooth as possible for those who are looking for work.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MOSAIC WINS EMPLOYMENT SERVICES CONTRACT

Vancouver, December 12, 2011

Multilingual Orientation Services Association for Immigrant Communities (MOSAIC) is very pleased to be one of the service providers selected by the Province to offer employment services to job seekers and employers under the new Employment Program of British Columbia. MOSAIC will provide services in the Vancouver Northeast area. The program will be delivered through WorkBC Employment Services Centres in communities across the province beginning in April 2012.

“Our goal is to give unemployed British Columbians the supports and services they need to find and keep a job,” said Minister of Social Development Stephanie Cadieux. “WorkBC Employment Services Centres will offer supports and services under one roof to help people get back to work quickly.”

MOSAIC is the only immigrant serving organization to be awarded such a contract. MOSAIC teamed up with Back in Motion, BC Centre for Ability, Coast Foundation, Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House, Kiwassa Neighbourhood House and the Vancouver Eastside Educational Enrichment Society to develop the winning proposal.

“MOSAIC has been providing employment services to immigrants in East Vancouver for more than thirty-five years and we are delighted that we will be able to continue to provide specialized services to immigrants, as well as to all British Columbians,” says Larry Chan, an Employment Manager at MOSAIC.

MOSAIC is a multi-service, multi-lingual agency with locations in Vancouver, North Vancouver and Burnaby. It helps approximately 60,000 newcomers per year settle in Canada and integrate into Canadian society.

Twelve clients who found jobs through MOSAIC shared their stories with job seekers at a recent MOSAIC Networking Event.

Job seekers heard from clients who found employment about the barriers they overcame, the challenges they faced in job searching, and finally their successes in finding employment.

One of the challenges newcomers to Canada face is the lack of social networks in their new country. Most jobs are found in Canada through the connections that people make. So, MOSAIC’s Networking events not only provide useful information and inspire job seekers, but they also help newcomers build their networks.

If you’d like to be part of MOSAIC’s Case Management Services which organizes these Networking Events, please Contact us at 604 708 9300 and ask to speak to a Case Manager.

Tyson Henneker, Training Coordinator at Commissionaires BC was at MOSAIC, on Friday October 14th, to talk to our clients about the security industry and training required. He also discussed typical job opportunities with Commissionaires BC and the hiring process.

More employers than ever before participated in the Seventh Annual Connections to Employment Job Fair. And, more job seekers showed up.  More than five thousand people came in search of a job.

There were 29 exhibitors, including WorkSafe BC, Concord Security, Aquinas Institute, Bank of Montreal, Canada Safeway, Bayshore Home Health, Home Depot, City of New Westminster, Spectra Energy, Dress For Success, Eminata Group, Coast Plaza Hotel, TD Canada Trust, and London Drugs. 80 percent of employers indicated that they were very satisfied with the event and the turnout.

MOSAIC, the Immigrant Services Society of BC, Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICS), and SUCCESS hosted the Job Fair in collaboration with the Vancouver Public Library.

Thomas Tam, CEO, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. opened the Fair. Catherine Evans, Chair, Vancouver Public Library Board and Linda Wood from the Employment & Labour Market Services Division of the BC Ministry of Social Development also spoke.

The event was a success! 35 clients attended and were impressed with the speeches, enjoyed the evening and exchanged life stories. It was a fun evening in a supportive, nurturing atmosphere, synonymous to MOSAIC's culture. The event was an invaluable opportunity for clients to connect and expand their networks over food and refreshments.

MOSAIC was very pleased to participate in the wrap-up event of the City of Vancouver’s Newcomers Mentorship Pilot on June 14th.  For the past four months, 19 city employees, including senior management staff, acted as mentors for 19 skilled immigrants. The mentors provided practical information on their field of expertise, job requirements, regulatory and licensing bodies, and networking opportunities. The highlight of the event was the personal story of Veronica Zhou an Accountant from China specializing in Auditing. She credited MOSAIC, the City of Vancouver, and most of all, her Mentor for her success. Veronica is currently employed with Revenue Services in the City of Vancouver and is looking forward to her new position as an Auditor with the Provincial Government. For more information about MOSAIC’s mentorship program, click here.

On June 15th, Stephanie Leung, Senior Human Resources Advisor from WorkSafeBC was onsite to talk about the role of WoleSafeBC in the work place and employment opportunities to 26 MOSAIC clients. Stephanie went through their web site and the application process. They hire for 100’s of different positions, there are lots of videos about jobs at WorkSafe and it’s a good resource for job seekers, in any field. All applicants must go through some form of testing depending on the position requirements. They are always hiring and there is plenty of room for promotion.
