Legal Advocacy Program

The Law Foundation of British Columbia

Funded by the Law Foundation of British Columbia, the Legal Advocacy Program helps immigrants and refugees deal effectively with Canada’s legal system, ensuring they have access to justice, and are treated fairly with full awareness of their legal rights and responsibilities. The program provides information, summary advice, referrals and/or representation on such issues as immigration, welfare, tenancy and employment. All services are linguistically and culturally sensitive.

What legal areas are covered?

·         Immigration law:

    • Issues not covered by Legal Aid
    • Citizenship

·         Family law (short service, no full representation):

    • Custody
    • Access
    • Separation agreements
    • Divorce

·         Poverty law and Income Assistance:

    • MEIA
    • Disability
    • EI
    • Employment Standards and other related issues
    • Tenancy issues

Who should access the program?

  • Individuals with low incomes and/or who have trouble with English
  • Individuals with little or no knowledge of the Canadian legal system
  • Recent arrivals and individuals who have exhausted all other available means

What is the first appointment like?

Initial appointments are 45-minute intakes serving as first points of contact with new clients; advocate services are not guaranteed, as intakes simply aim to identify issues and determine what services can be provided.

Please remember, program advocates may:

  • Only be able to give information or summary advice
  • Refer clients to other organizations for assistance

Client information

Please be sure to arrive on time for your appointment. If you must miss an appointment, please call to cancel. If you are over 15 minutes late, your appointment will automatically be rescheduled.

Limited interpretation services are available; please let us know if you need an interpreter.

Financial assessment guidelines are used to determine client eligibility for service.
All advocacy services provided by this program are free (except filing and application fees, which are each client’s own cost).
