Men in Change Program
Men in Change is a program that provides counselling
and education to immigrant men who have threatened, attempted or
committed domestic violence against their partners, or are at risk
of such behaviour.
The program’s main objective is to prevent the
occurrence or reoccurrence of physical and/or psychological abuse
within families by:
-
Understanding and overcoming domestic violence
-
Identifying and expressing a full range of emotions besides anger
-
Discovering personal triggers and gaining stress-management
tools
-
Learning constructive ways of dealing with conflict
Men in Change offers the following programs:
-
RVT Program for
Indo-Canadian Men:
A 16-week group-treatment program funded by the correctional
system of British Columbia
for Punjabi-, Hindi- or Urdu-speaking men referred by their
probation officers. Once assessed and accepted to the program,
attendance and participation become part of each participant’s
terms of probation.
-
RVT Multicultural
Program:
An eight-session group-treatment program available in English and
Spanish. Probation officers refer prospective participants for
assessment. Once accepted to the program, attendance and
participation become part of each participant’s terms of
probation.
-
RVT Interpreted
Program:
This six-session
group-treatment program provides services to clients unable to
access other RVT programs due to language barriers. Interpreters
help assess and treat participants.
-
Men in Change
Community Program:
Funded by the Ministry for Children and Family Development (MCFD),
this program aims to prevent domestic violence. Self-referred
participants or those referred by MCFD, community workers or
family members may receive individual and/or group counselling in
English, Spanish or Vietnamese (interpreters may also be used).
Individual counselling takes a short-term, solution-focused
approach.
PARTICIPATION: Rather than act on their emotions, male participants
are encouraged to reflect and share. Through group education and
individual support, participants become aware of the power and
control tactics they use in their relationships. This awareness
helps them take responsibility for their actions and put an end to
the mistreatment of their partners and/or families.
