Multicultural Victim Services Program

Are you new to Vancouver? Have you been victimized by crime? Do you want to speak to someone who can help in your own language? The Victim Services Program can help. We deliver multilingual, culturally sensitive support to victims of crime, whether or not the police/justice system are involved. We provide immigrants, refugees and newcomers of all backgrounds the following services:

  • Emotional support

  • General information

  • Justice-related information

  • Practical assistance and support

  • Advocacy

  • Accompaniment

  • Referrals

  • Public education

Our workers give emotional support by listening and helping you deal with trauma. You’ll also be given information on what you could do next and where you can get more assistance.

Workers will also provide you with general information on topics like health, safety, legal aid, housing, welfare, childcare, community resources, etc.

Justice-related information is given on a case-by-case basis. You will be informed of the results of a police investigation, the status of the person who committed the crime or how you can protect yourself. If your case is going to court, you will be provided with witness orientation, and information on courtroom etiquette and procedure.

Being victimized by crime may require you to reach out and explain your situation to various people and social programs. Our workers will give you practical assistance and support in completing any forms, applications and letters you require.

In terms of advocacy, workers will make phone calls on your behalf to an employer, welfare office, emergency shelter, law firm, the police, etc.

You may ask to be accompanied by a worker to a Vancouver courthouse, legal-aid office, police station, law firm, etc.

Our workers can refer you to and help you access other community resources.

In addition, the Victim Services Program offers education to individuals and groups within various cultural communities on violence against women, safety assessment and planning, and the services offered by MOSAIC.

You may be a victim of crime if you have:

  • Been assaulted by someone you know or a stranger

  • Been robbed of money or personal belongings

  • Been stalked or harassed by someone you know or a stranger

  • Been physically hurt

  • Been sexually assaulted or touched inappropriately without consent

  • Been abducted

  • Been afraid of your partner’s possessive, controlling behaviour

  • Been controlled financially

  • Been scared into believing you cannot go to the police

  • Been prevented from getting a job or taking a class

  • Been constantly insulted and degraded

  • Been held at fault and always blamed for everything

  • Been threatened about losing custody of or not being able to see your children

  • Been threatened about your immigration or sponsorship status

  • Had a pet hurt or killed

  • Been told a family member will be hurt or killed

MOSAIC Multicultural Outreach Program

The Multicultural Outreach Program offers public education and training on abuse toward women, as well as outreach services to women living with or who have left an abusive partner.

This unique program examines the emotional and psychological impact of abuse on the entire family from a female perspective. Not only does the program include information about women’s rights, the dynamics of abuse, and safety tips, participants are taught how to recognize abuse in their own lives and how to rebuild after domestic violence.

When it comes to accessing support services, advocacy plays a crucial role in helping female victims of abuse break down barriers. As such, the program shows community groups and professionals how to support abused clients without creating a further imbalance of power. Community and service workers learn to effectively listen and offer advice, information and support while allowing women to, ultimately, make their own decisions.

Individuals and community groups who would benefit from this program include support groups for immigrant women, family support workers, neighbourhood community workers, domestic violence workers, and childcare workers. Educators and consultants of other community programs are also welcome to access this service.
